Attention during inspections in Germany – small crack, big consequences

In recent months, we have repeatedly seen how strict and detailed German enforcement can be. Even when everything seems in order, a small detail can lead to major delays and high costs. A recent example shows just how far this can go:

Perfect inspection... almost
A Dutch transport company was recently inspected by the BAG in Germany. The results of the inspection were excellent in almost every aspect:

  • ✅ Driving time regulations: fully compliant
  • ✅ Load securing: without defects
  • ✅ Documentation: complete and correct
  • ✅ Technical condition of the vehicle: approved
  • ✅ Latest inspection: recent and valid

Still, the truck was stopped.

⚠️ The reason? A small crack in the windshield
The truck had a small crack on the side of the windshield. In the Netherlands, the vehicle had still passed the RDW inspection. In Germany, however, this was not accepted:

  • ❌ The driver was not allowed to continue driving
  • ❌ The windshield had to be replaced in Germany
  • ❌ A maximum of 20 km was allowed to drive to a garage
  • ❌ The replacement took 3 days → 3 days of downtime!

The option to drive home and replace the windshield within a reasonable period (e.g., 7 days) was not offered. No leniency was shown.

🚫 Tip: check the windshield for cracks before departure, no matter how small!
The message is clear: a small crack can have major consequences in Germany. That’s why we recommend always doing an extra check for windshield damage before heading to Germany.

The Legal Control app offers a solution:

  • Have the windshield inspected before every trip to Germany
  • Take photos of any damage and inspection certificates
  • Schedule replacement in time if in doubt
  • In case of damage on the road: Document the damage thoroughly. You can use our Legal Control app for this. With the Legal Doc’s function, you can take photos, send messages, and everything is logged with UTC time and exact location. LINK TO INSTRUCTIONS
  • In case of doubt or inspection issues: contact us immediately
