Update: Danish Toll Fines — Court Cases Temporarily Paused
Dear customer,
We would like to inform you that the Danish Public Prosecutor has cancelled the scheduled court hearing regarding unpaid toll fines, effectively placing these cases on hold for the time being. This means that no further legal action will be taken against the involved carriers for now.
The postponement follows a request from International Transport Denmark (ITD) to obtain clarification from the European Court of Justice regarding the legality of the current Danish fine system. At this moment fines are issued at a fixed rate of 4,500 DKK (and since 1 July 2025: 9,000 DKK) regardless of the circumstances. According to ITD, this may be in violation of EU law.
It is important to note that transport companies are still receiving toll fines from Denmark. Until the European Court provides clarity, our advice remains unchanged: do not pay these fines. No increases or additional charges are currently being added, because the legality of the fines is under dispute.
The authorities now wish to resolve the EU-related legal questions before resuming any individual cases.
We will continue to monitor these developments closely and will keep you informed as soon as new information becomes available.
