ETA Requirement for Travelers to the UK
The UK government has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to strengthen border security and streamline the entry process. This system applies to millions of travelers each year and has direct implications for transport companies and their drivers.
What is the ETA?
The ETA is a digital pre-travel authorization linked to the applicant’s passport. It allows travelers to visit the UK for short stays without a visa. An ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires and can be used multiple times within this period.
- Cost: £10
- Validity: Maximum six months per stay
- Application process: Via the UK ETA app or the official UK government website
- Required information: Passport details, contact information, and answers to security questions
- Decision-making: Usually within a few hours, but the process can take up to three working days.
Who needs an ETA?
Starting today, all non-European travelers who do not require a visa for short stays must apply for an ETA before arriving in the UK. This applies to tourists, business travelers, and – importantly – truck drivers.
- Exempt: UK and Irish citizens
- European travelers: ETA requirement starts from March 5, 2025, enforcement from April 2, 2025.
Truck drivers are not exempt from the ETA requirement. This means that EU drivers must obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK. Similarly, UK truck drivers will need an ETIAS to enter the EU once this system becomes operational.
Support through Legal Control
At Transport in Nood, we are actively working with our app Legal Control to explore how we can assist clients with the ETA application.
Currently, we can only provide specific details after March 5. We will update you on this matter later.
