Belgium strictly enforces over-long aerodynamic cab of DAF

In recent months, several stops of DAF trucks by police came to light in Belgium due to exceeding the maximum vehicle length, caused by the presence of an aerodynamic cab. As a result, we contacted the DAF dealer in Belgium and TLN. It appears that Belgium has adopted specific national legislation regulating these situations.

Legislation and Exceedances.

For vehicles upgraded in energy efficiency and aerodynamics, the following rules apply from May 7, 2020, according to Directive 2007/46/EC:

  • Vehicles equipped with aerodynamic cabs may exceed the maximum length, as long as these cabs contribute to improved aerodynamic performance, energy efficiency and safety.
  • Vehicles with aerodynamic devices longer than 500 mm must be type-approved according to the type-approval requirements within the framework of the aforementioned Directive before being put into service.
  • Aerodynamic devices shall be compatible with intermodal transport and, in the retracted/folded position, may not exceed the maximum vehicle length by more than 20 cm.
  • Vehicles or vehicle combinations equipped with this type of cab must be able to describe a circle with an external radius of 12.50 m and an internal radius of 5.30 m.
  • The exceedances may not lead to an increase in the loading length or the loading capacity.

Action Item

Mr. John Genetello of DAF Trucks Benelux has prepared a document for all customers who are using this type of DAF. This document is available in French, Dutch and English. Please pass this document along to your drivers so that they do not lose time when stopped due to excessive vehicle length.
